Chick Poems by First Grade

First grade celebrated the upcoming chick hatching day and poetry month by writing acrostic poems about chicks, eggs, and chickens. Here are a few poems that they created!

Day 12 - Candling Day!

It is finally time to see how our little chicks are growing. Through a process called candling, a light is shown on the bottom side of the egg, illuminating the inside so that a shadow of the chick can be seen. Some of the darker colored shells are more difficult to see through, but luckily we have a few light colored shells that are allowing us to view the growing chick perfectly!

One student made the observation when viewing the egg that the defining line between the light and dark parts of the egg was "like the equator".

It's Chicken Time Again!

We are so excited to begin our journey of hatching chickens again this year. First grade is learning all about the life cycle of a chicken. First graders, along with the rest of the students at Hughes are getting to see first hand how chickens are hatched.

The eggs will be in the incubator for 21 days before the chicks are ready to make their debut. We are excited that the chicks arrived on Thursday, March 23rd. The anticipated hatch date is April 13th!
